30 Minute Legs

31 Mar

I don’t know about you but this weather back and forth is taking a major toll on my allergies and sinuses! Sunday I was completely knocked on my butt. Thank goodness for other medical friends who come over and confirm you don’t have strep when you can’t swallow but don’t want to go to urgent care. (Times I love being a nurse… check). Because I wasn’t feeling so hot, Sunday and Monday turned into off days and I HATE taking two in a row. I can’t remember the last time I had to do that but, sometimes, you have to listen to your body.

Today I knew I had to get a solid workout in. There was a little confusion with my trainer this morning and we ended up moving that workout but I still took advantage of being at the gym early and got a great leg workout in before having to come home and meet the carpet cleaners. If you’re tight on time I almost always go to timed super sets.

Here it is:

3 sets:

  • 15 walking lunges /leg
  • 15 hamstring curls on balance ball
  • 12 goblet squats

3 sets:

  • 12 Leg press
  • 15 side shuffles/side (stay low!)
  • 12 Straight leg deadlift with upright row

That’s it. Don’t rest more than 45 sec- 1 min in between super sets and try not to rest between exercises. Took about 20-25 min and then later today a friend came over and we took the pups on a hike at one of the state parks around here. All in all, my legs are pretty tired 🙂

Shameless

21 May

If you don’t like dogs, you might as well stop reading. This is a shameless plug for the rescue pups out there. It isn’t sponsored in any way, just something that pulls on my heart.

“I just want to drink wine, save animals and work out”

Since I hurt my back I hadn’t been able to walk both the dogs by myself– my weight limit had been 20 lbs… they’re over 200 together. But now I’m supposed to be pushing myself to make sure I’ll be good to go when I do get back to work. Which means… time to walk the pups! So me, myself, and I walked my greater than 200 lbs worth of dog on a hike. I’ll admit, I was nervous. One good pull and I’d be back to the start but, they were so good! If you knew Maia you’d be surprised by this too; I swear she only has one setting on a walk and it’s “go”. It reminded me that dogs are more intuitive than we give them credit for a lot of times. It’s easy to forget when they’re driving us crazy barking at the groundhogs or pulling on their leash but they try to take care of us. At the very least they get you up off the couch and take you on walks (or runs). I’m a firm believer that dogs are a staple in an active life 😉

So here’s my request. If you can, get involved. Donate time, donate money, donate supplies. Volunteer, foster, or adopt. However you can, just get involved. “Our” rescue is East Coast Gentle Giants. Of course it would be great if you chose to help them but, really, any rescue needs support.

Puppy’s first Hike

9 Oct

On Saturday hubby and I really wanted to go hiking since I finally got the okay but all the national parks are closed because of the government shut down. I asked for some good places on Facebook and discovered a state park within a reasonable drive, it was a bit crowded (probably because people’s choices were limited) but it was great to be able to start hiking again! The best news? My ankle was very fatigued (just that feeling you get when you’re doing high reps… that burning and then just so sore) but not painful.

We brought miss Maia with us and while she was pulling a lot of the time (we’re still working on leash manners) because of other dogs she did pretty well.

ImageI worked Sunday and then yesterday I woke up feeling sick so, other than physical therapy, took the day off. Still not feeling 100% so it’ll be a light day today but it feels great to be getting back into the swing of things and starting to get back to normal activities.

Doctors and Such

13 Jun

I’m heading to a new ankle doctor today and really hope he can either find a better solution or that by some miracle we can get everything scheduled around my starting my new job July 8 (I got an ER position at a hospital in DC that I am SO excited about!). I’ve obviously still been working out etc but I’m so tired of feeling held back, even just when hubby and I want to go for a hike- heck sometimes just a walk- we have to plan for the fact that I wouldn’t be able to go all that long without it really starting to hurt. I’m ready to be my old self again so please send some prayers/happy thoughts/whatever your beliefs are my way today 🙂

Hello Again!

13 Nov

Oh man… what a month! The wedding was everything I could have asked for, the honeymoon was even better, and now I have moved to Japan! I have no car, we don’t really have a house yet, and… well, a lot of other unknowns but we’re here and I am trying to start a routine of some kind until we get more settled in.

We went to France for the honeymoon, it was wonderful! Ate lots of fondue (an easy gluten free option), had great (and some not so great) wine, and just toured around. Stayed active so I didn’t feel too bad about the food (and it was all SO fresh!) but I was ready to get back into a better diet by the time we got home.

We went up into the Alps (Chamonix, Mont Blanc) for a couple days and I have to say, I went on the hardest hike I think I’ve ever done. It was also the highest hike I’ve done to date (2317 meters at the top, lots of switchbacks)… and so worth it. The view from the top was awesome and I had a huge sense of accomplishment. Maybe misplaced, I’m sure people who hike all the time would laugh at it but hey, I was proud of myself. Here’s the view from the top… we had not been prepared for the snow so we ended up taking a tram back down.

Oh, and here’s me… running to the top because I was cold and really wanted hot chocolate:

Anyway, I got up with hubby this morning (his first day back at work) and made eggs and turkey bacon; I guess so far so good on the eating healthy out here? 😉 We’re house sitting for a friend so today I’m planning on taking their two dogs out, they both pull a lot so we’ll see how long the walk actually lasts, and then trying to find the gym on the base. I also plan on cooking a lot until I get settled in with a job here so hopefully that means new recipes for you guys too.
