New Years’ Reflection

6 Jan

I’m torn today. You see, I didn’t specifically make a New Years Resolution for fitness this year. I made other resolutions, mainly to get better at staying in touch with friends spread around the world. I want to be clear though, that doesn’t mean I don’t have fitness goals. It does mean I didn’t wait until New Years Eve to make those goals, and it certainly means I don’t want it to take all of 2015 to accomplish my current goals.

To me, I want a lifetime of continuous goals and resolutions. I can say I want to be healthier in 2015 but, what does that even mean? I want to eat healthier, sure. I want to work out more, always. But none of those have a real measurement of success. I think that’s why I don’t like New Years Fitness Resolutions. They tend to be so broad that they’re almost impossible to track or so specific that it shouldn’t take you all year to accomplish, then what?

It seems to be taken as a given that people won’t maintain their resolutions, in large part because resolutions are made in lists and in such broad terms. So here’s my challenge to you. Make your fitness goals but set a timeline and a measurement of success. Then when you accomplish those goals, add on new ones. Keep moving forward, even into 2016. Don’t stop just because you make awesome progress into this year’s resolution. Certainly don’t give up when March comes around and you aren’t a completely new person. Long-term fitness has to be a lifestyle choice, and that doesn’t go away when next NYE rolls around.

Be Inspired Every Day

Be Inspired Every Day

In the spirit of my workout goals mentioned in my November post, I have been adding weight lifting back into my workouts. I’ve been having some issues getting my physical therapy covered so it’s been slower progress than I was hoping but I’m starting to find a happy balance between my PT exercises and other workout styles. I’ve been writing down my workouts but not making the time to post them (Which reminds me, one of my other goals is to post twice a week.)

Today was leg day at the gym…

Warmed up with PT exercises and planks

2 x Walking lunges (down and back length of the gym)

2 x side shuffles (down and back length of the gym)

2 x walking lunges to backward run (lunge down, backwards run back)

2 x 20 squats

3 x 12 single leg deadlifts (I had to switch to normal straight leg deadlifts because of my back but shoot for the single leg)

3 x Super-set:

  • 12 quad pull-ins on medicine ball
  • 12 hamstring curls on medicine ball

We finished with stretching and some core work.

As we head into the time of New Years’ Resolutions, I thought it would be appropriate to re-post some tips and advice for the gym… enjoy!

2013… looking back to move forward

9 Jan

As I said in my last post I think 2013 was probably the busiest year of my life. Before moving forward I wanted to take a minute to look back at the highlights of everything we did and appreciate how far I’ve come, not just with finding balance in this fitness journey but life as the bigger picture.

In Jan. 2013, hubby and I were living in Japan and I was running my own personal training business while waiting to start work as a nurse at the Navy Hospital there.

Japan was a great adventure involving new foods, new travels, and life together as a married couple.

In May 2013 we moved back to the states, set up an apartment and I began the job search in DC to find my dream job as an ER nurse. Hubby was gone until Aug., when he finally moved back home and I started my current job. Oh, and we adopted our first dog. August also brought an unexpected loss which meant traveling to Oklahoma for a few days while starting my new job.

October brought our anniversary, buying our first house, and moving for both of us to be closer to work. Once settled in November we rescued our second dog and prepared to have our family out for the holidays. After a year full of joy and some sadness we are heading into 2014 expecting the unexpected as always but my resolution is to take care of myself… not just getting in workouts and balanced eating but taking time out for me. Which means getting back to writing and other things I enjoy. Time to smell the roses and all that.

Back… for real this time!

2 Jan

Happy New Year!! This year I really want to work on finding the balance between my fitness goals and everyday life. I’m hopefully getting into the hospital out here soon and cooking for two has been an adjustment so, time to balance it all out again.

Which, in part, starts with blogging. We finally got internet up and running at our house! It’s slow for now but it works. I have so many recipes I’ve been making and things I want to post about but instead of looking back, I’m just going to start from now.

I made a ham and sweet potato soup for dinner tonight that turned out well. Here they have the Benimo potatoes so… it was bright purple but really tasty and used the rest of our Christmas ham and the bone we had frozen. I have a shoot on Saturday so kept it simple… water, ham, potatoes, pepper (white and black), cinnamon, onions, and garlic. I made the broth first with the ham bone and spices, 1/2 onion, and 2 cloves of garlic. Then I drained it and used the broth to boil the potatoes, chopped up ham, and extra cinnamon. Took some time to boil everything down etc. but was very simple to make 🙂 I did forget to take a picture, out of practice but next time we make the potatoes I’ll make sure to post it if you haven’t seen a benimo potato before.

Other than that I made the Jamie Eason Cinnamon Bread today. I added in a pinch of nutmeg this time into the batter and I really like it. Hubby even said he’d eat the bread instead of a normal cinnamon roll so I consider it a win.

Lastly, I promised I would post the Jamie Eason Chocolate Bars again. This time I subbed in some almond meal with my GF flour… they were even better! It added just a touch more sweetness but was still totally clean. I just did 1/4 C almond meal and then the rest Namaste GF flour.

Okay, that’s all the recipes for the post! I had also said I’d post a wedding picture so, still waiting on the CD of the professional ones but here’s one our friends took. Married life has been great so far 🙂

Christmas Resolutions

29 Nov

Sorry (again) for the lack of posting! We don’t have internet set up in our house yet so, I’m currently at Starbucks and thought I’d post something quick. 🙂

December is just around the corner and I have lots of goals for the month. I want to share my big ones so you all can hold me accountable…

1. Get back to a 5 day a week workout routine

2. Get my house put together

3. Start making my own protein bars/clean snacks again

I’m a big believer in taking it one day at a time to reach the bigger goals but there you have it, my Christmas resolutions… because why wait another month?
